What to notice
Draw the drainage sequence
Mark the lowest affected fixture and any floor drain, without opening cleanouts or covers. Record gurgling, rising water, odors, and whether toilets flush differently. A property map or previous repair record can help. Do not use multiple fixtures to force a repeat if that risks wastewater overflow.
Include property context
Tell the provider whether the building is single-family, multi-unit, or connected to shared facilities. Identify the property manager or person authorized to make decisions. If a public utility has issued a notice, preserve it. Shared symptoms do not themselves decide whether private or public infrastructure is involved.
Ask how the proposed access follows the evidence
Before authorizing clearing or inspection, ask which line is suspected and why a particular access point is suitable. Confirm property protection, equipment route, limitations, and what happens if the obstruction cannot be reached. A repeat visit should build on a documented finding rather than restart the same guess.
